Description
Every day in music classrooms across the country, and across the world—from elementary classrooms, to graduate music libraries—many students fail to see themselves represented in walls plastered with posters of “The Great Composers” which feature only images of men.
These portraits of some of the master women composers featured on our site will act as a mirror for young women to see themselves in the music curriculum, to see that they too can be successful and influential musicians.
An Online Companion is included that provides some of the following digital content for each of the composers above with an asterisk (more are being added):
- Biography
- Lesson Stem
- Quick Facts about the composer
- Quiz with multiple-choice and true-false questions
- Activity (word search, crossword, guided notes, quizzes, listening maps)
- Assessment Ideas
- Links to suggested reading
- Links to Spotify playlists
- Printable PDFs
Each portrait was painted by hand with brush and ink by UK artist Margit van der Zwan, with blocks of color added digitally. These artistic posters are printed on museum-grade cardstock and are 9″ x 12″ each.
